Dear primary school parents and families,
It has been another eventful and action-packed two weeks in the primary school at Haileybury Tianjin. The second round of the CCTV competition took place at our school on the 21st of March. Our primary school students participated in the second round and due to the large number of entrants, the speeches were delivered in our classrooms again. In round two, our students spoke for 60 seconds on the ‘My Dream’ topic without the usage of notes or palm cards. After the speeches, they were also asked some questions by the CCTV judges. Our students had spent many weeks preparing for the second round by writing speeches and practising in and out of the classroom. A significant amount of time was also allocated at assembly on Fridays for the purpose of giving our students stage practice. I am pleased to announce that many of our students have progressed into round three which is also the Tianjin final. The Tianjin final will take place on the 4th of May and all our students are already guaranteed a third place Tianjin final award if they enter. There are three parts in round three. The first part is a prepared speech on the topic ‘This is the Special Me’. In this part, students should create a prepared speech and speak for a total of one minute on the topic. In the second part, lower primary school students will be given two pictures and upper primary school students four pictures to describe and to create a story therewith. The third part is an impromptu question and answer segment where students respond to a question from the judges for a total of 20 seconds. The question will relate to the lives of our primary aged students such as studying and hobbies however students may need to think creatively such as ‘If you were a dolphin, how would you introduce yourself’? Each student will receive an accumulative score from these three parts and the top 50 in Tianjin will progress into the fourth round (May 11th). The fourth round is a debate where participants are given 5 minutes to prepare on a specific topic. Contestants will battle it out and the debate will last for a total of two minutes. The winners of this fourth round will be eligible to enter into the national finals. We hope that those who have progressed into the third round will continue and we trust our students will shine even brighter this year.

Haileybury has long had a policy of cooperating and collaborating with the parents’ community of our school. Feedback from our parents is continuously gathered through our weekly academic reporting system and these comments are reviewed. Adjustments and improvements to teaching and learning are also constantly made through this system. Parents, however, bring to the school more than just their comments and observations - they also bring their skills, talents and networks. On Friday the 22nd of March, Ms. Guo, the mother of Alex Wan (Year 5 Green student) presented on the ‘History of Western Art’. The students were fascinated at various well-known paintings such as Jacques-Louis David’s painting of Napoleon and Andy Warhol’s modern creations. I am positive that these students now have a greater appreciation and understanding of western art. Ms. Jenny Jiao (a relative of year 6 yellow student Joey Jiao) also gave a presentation on disease prevention and food hygiene which has resulted in our students becoming more conversant on how to stay fit and healthy. We trust that the mutual collaboration between the school and its parents’ community will continue and that we will also keep on learning from each other.

Merit awards have been given out to outstanding students at assemblies on Fridays for nearly two years now. The practice of giving out merit awards to high achieving individuals is a practice that also occurs in many Australian schools. Every week, two students from each class in the primary school are given the awards by their homeroom teachers. The program seeks to encourage and reward students for high academic achievement and virtuous behaviour. Every week, it is pleasing to see many smiles illuminating from the faces of our students when it is announced that they are the award recipients of the week. The awards boost the self-confidence of our students and the giving out of the awards will continue to play an important part in our weekly assemblies. Our 20 new student leaders have also started their new responsibilities. The student leaders have been organised into different groups based on the different days of the school week and each leader serves once a week on a rotating basis. Some of their responsibilities include manning the school gate in the mornings, monitoring the cleanliness of each classroom, making sure that students are walking orderly and assisting teachers with miscellaneous duties. It has been great to see our students serving the school community punctually, diligently and respectfully. Through their self-less work and dedication, our student leaders are helping to ensure that the primary school continues to operate smoothly and safely.

A school song is a unique song which students sing at assemblies or at special occasions. School songs are important because they express a school’s values, priorities and expectations. ‘We are Haileybury’ is the name of our school song and it is sung wholly in English. The first verse is sung by males. Physical strength, courage, victory, honour, respect, determination and achievement are the core themes of the first verse. The second verse is sung by females. Knowledge, acceptance, skill, beauty, integrity, creativity and success are the core themes of the second verse. The third verse is sung together, and it speaks of pride, vision, compassion, high standards, love and friendship. On the 18th of March, all primary school classes participated in a school song singing contest to improve our students’ understanding and familiarity of the school song. Our students learnt the lyrics of the song and practiced singing the song prior to the contest as the themes and words in the song are relatively complex for our primary aged students. There were 7 judges in the contest and their role was to adjudicate on the singing of each class. Many of our classes sang melodiously and the contest provided an excellent opportunity for our students to not only learn more English but also to instil more school pride.

As mentioned earlier, we will be graced again with the visit of renowned Australian educator Mr. John Fleming next week. Mr. Fleming is a deputy principal at Haileybury Melbourne and has been teaching in Australia for over 40 years. Mr. Fleming is a steadfast advocate of the explicit teaching model which he has implemented across all of Haileybury’s six campuses. The explicit teaching model ensures that students are learning by moving concepts from short to long term memory. Haileybury achieves this through small class sizes, individual attention and pitching lessons to a high level. Explicit teaching also follows a simple ‘I do, we do, you do’ process. ‘I do’ refers to teaching, ‘we do’ is teacher-class collaboration and ‘you do’ is pitched at each student’s individual needs. Explicit Teaching focuses on exceptional student engagement, student motivation and the appreciation of progress. Mr. John Fleming will come into our classrooms to ensure that the explicit teaching model continues to be implemented in our sub-school so that every student continues to improve each and every day.
