HIST PRIMARY CAMPUS NEWS and INFORMATION Bulletin 12, Week 4, Semester 2, 2018-19
Dear primary school parents and families,
It has been another eventful and action-packed two weeks in the primary school at Haileybury Tianjin. In March, teachers will be working diligently to improve student academic outcomes across all subject areas. Many methods and policies are being employed to achieve this objective. One of the ways this is being achieved is through the presentation of open classes by our senior teachers. On Monday the 4th of March, physical education teacher Ms. Lily Wei gave a demonstration class with her year 5 green class. It was impressive to see many of our year 5’s swimming well and using conventional freestyle stroke and technique. We sure do have many avid and proficient swimmers in the primary school. On Tuesday the 5th of March, Chinese calligraphy teacher Ms. Rachel Zhang gave a demonstration class titled ‘Tower Shaped Words’ again with the 5 green class. The audience was impressed with the beauty, finesse and control of our students in their Chinese character writing. Primary school Chinese teacher Ms. Rosie Jiang and primary school Maths teacher Ms. Amy Sun also gave demonstration lessons to a combined year 3 class on Thursday the 7th of March. Ms. Jiang’s lesson was titled ‘The Clay Pot and the Iron Pot’ and Ms. Sun’s lesson was titled ‘The Zero Quotient’. The children were captivated by the educational and lively presentations from our seasoned practitioners. Many of our senior primary school teachers have been at Haileybury Tianjin for nearly 5 years and during this time, they have developed effective teaching practices and procedures which were put on show during these demonstration lessons. I am sure much was learnt simply through observing our senior teachers in action. The English program in the primary school has also been progressing well. As mentioned in the last bulletin, our Reading Buddy Program has started. This semester, we are lucky to have the support of around 50 middle school students who are providing intensive English support to primary school students from years one, two and three. They are reading from the popular Oxford Reading Tree, Biscuit and the Step into Reading series. Teachers and students have already commented on how smoothly these sessions have been. They have also noted the many smiles that have radiated from the faces of our children when they accomplish the honourable feat of reading a book in their second language. Our primary school students are blessed to have the assistance of our middle school students and the school will continue to support this important program because reading plays an important role in language acquisition.

Our afternoon club program has started, and it continues to uplift the hearts and minds of our students. Our students have been keen on participating in the many clubs and activities provided by our own teachers such as chess, soccer basketball, ballet/dance, CCTV training, drawing, swimming and Chinese calligraphy but they have also been given the chance to participate in fee paying clubs such as tennis, golf, piano, drums, acting, modelling, dance, taekwondo and robotics. At Haileybury, we believe it is important that our students excel not only in the core subjects of English, Maths and Chinese but that they also develop their natural talents and extra-curricular abilities so that they can become well rounded individuals who are able to thrive in the outside world. Who knows? Maybe the next Steve Jobs or Yao Ming is sitting unpretentiously in our classroom. Additionally, our students were given the opportunity to sharpen and develop their leadership skills by volunteering to become student leaders. Student leaders assist by supporting teachers, managing students and organising school-based activities. On March the 4th, aspiring student leaders were asked to deliver a speech on the stage on why they should be elected as student leaders. On the 11th of March, the student leaders for this new semester were formally announced at assembly. It is my honour to announce that 20 new student representatives have been elected. The student prefects for each grade are listed below. We wish all our new leaders every success as they begin their new responsibilities.

English proficiency continues to be a core competency at Haileybury so we have continued to give our students opportunity to use and express themselves in English. One of the ways this is being achieved is through our active participation in English competitions such as the national CCTV Star of Outlook competition. We have not eased off in our preparation for the second round. On Friday the 8th of March, 5 students participated in another mock CCTV round 2 competition on the ‘My Dream’ topic. The students were Kong Zi, Dora Xu, Jim Li, Jinny Guo and Penelope Weng. It was a closely fought contest with very little separating the 5 students. In the end, the mock competition was won by Penelope Weng followed by Jinny Guo in a close second and Jim Li in third. The three winners all received an honourable Haileybury participatory certificate and Penelope also received a soccer ball. Round two of the CCTV competition will take place on Thursday the 21st of March inside our school campus. Students will be given 60 seconds to answer the ‘My Dream’ topic without the usage of any notes or palm cards. They will then be asked questions by the judges on the topic for another 30 seconds. Students are also able to perform a talent show during this second round, but the talent performance must be closely related to the topic of their speech.

The primary school parents’ association meeting was convened at our school on Friday the 8th of March. The parents’ association committee comprises of one parent representative from each of the 12 classes in primary school as well as senior staff from our school. Meetings are convened regularly to inform but also to discuss and deliberate about school matters. Before the meeting, the 12 members of the committee were invited to join our primary school assembly in the morning because the day coincidentally also happened to be International Women’s Day. As all members were females, each member was given a rose to commemorate the occasion. International Women’s day started in the early 20th century in countries such as America, Austria, Germany, Denmark and Russia but it was not until 1975 that the United Nations officially recognised the day and made it into a world-wide celebration. The day marks the progress and the advancement of the rights of women around the world. After the assembly, the committee made their way to a conference room where they were joined by Mr. Brian Gao, Ms. Vivian Jia, Mr. Xu, Ms. Amy Sun and Ms. Rachel Zhang. Ms. Zhang and Ms. Sun gave presentations on Art and Maths before opportunity was given for discussion. After the formal discussions, delegates then headed to the canteen where they shared lunch together. The meeting was another example of the mutual collaboration and cooperation between the school and its parents’ community. The school will continue to work together with the parents’ community to ensure that our students continue to improve every day.

On Wednesday the 6th of March, the primary school participated in a whole school fire drill. Fire safety is something that we don’t often think about but being uninformed or ill-prepared can have some very disastrous consequences. Fire disasters cause the deaths of many Chinese people every year. Moreover, many billions of yuan are lost due to fire damage each year. The whole school participated in this fire drill and it only took a short amount of time for the whole school to evacuate onto the school oval. It was pleasing to see many students taking the fire drill seriously as they were seen running to the evacuation location in a brace position. We hope we never have to encounter a serious disaster at our school but with regular disaster prevention drills taking place at our school each year, we trust our school will be ready even when disaster strikes.

Flying kites is a millennia year old tradition that many children from all around the world continue to enjoy. Last week, our primary school students made and decorated their own kites under the guidance and instruction of welfare director Mr. Eric Xu and Art teacher Ms. Rachael Zhang. After the kites were made, children were given the opportunity to fly their kites outside. Many of our students were elated when they saw their kites flying blissfully in the breeze. There is a saying in Chinese: Children come back early from school for the purpose of taking advantage of the east wind to fly kites. Kites have been flown by Chinese people for a long time and Chinese people believe the best way children enjoy Spring is by running in the Spring breeze without fear. Poetically speaking, we decorate our kites to individualise our own kites. We hold onto the kite’s string to release a Spring hymn and we fly kites at Haileybury to experience Spring’s warmth.

The primary school has made notable progress despite being only in the fourth week of school. Senior teachers have already given open classes, a parents’ association meeting has already been convened and we have continued to prepare our students for the national CCTV Star of Outlook English public speaking competition which will take place at our school next Thursday. We have laid concrete foundations for the rest of the academic year so let us continue to work together to ensure that every child continues to improve with each passing day.
Lift up your hearts and your kites at Haileybury!
