Dear primary school parents and families.
It has been another eventful and thrilling two weeks at the primary school in Tianjin. In November, teachers have been working hard to improve student academic outcomes across the core subject areas of English, Chinese and Maths. Many methods and policies have been employed to achieve this objective. For example, senior teachers across the core subjects have given demonstration lessons this past fortnight so that good teaching practice can be disseminated. On the 21st of November, year 6 Chinese teacher Ms. Yoyo Gao gave a demonstration lesson with her year 6 class titled ‘The Old man and the Seagull’. On Friday the 23rd of November, lower primary school English coordinator - Mr. Nathan Williamson gave a demonstration lesson with his 1C class on vocabulary and on the 27th of November, upper primary school English coordinator - Mr. William Fang gave a demonstration class with his year 6 class on the application of B1 verbs in the past tense. Many of our senior primary school teachers have been at Haileybury Tianjin for nearly 5 years and during this time, they have developed effective teaching practices and procedures which were put on show during these demonstration lessons. I am sure much was learnt simply through observing our senior teachers in action. Furthermore, student work across the core subject areas was also examined by deputy director of Teaching and Research Rosie Jiang and by our head of department members on Tuesday the 27th of November. The work came from numerous sources such as from student workbooks, exercise books, textbooks and notebooks. Much of the work shared the commonality of excellence and orderliness and the staff at Haileybury will continue to collaborate and learn from each other so that high academic standards can be maintained.
English teachers have been focused on improving the vocabulary and grammatical outcomes of students. On the morning of Friday the 23rd of November, the primary school held another vocabulary competition. Vocabulary retention is an important part of learning any language and this time, the year 5 KET and year 6KET classes competed against each other in a sizzling contest. English competitions are organised during our English assemblies for the purpose of cementing and improving the English retention our students. Our students love being on stage and many enjoy the competitive nature of competitions. In the end, 5 KET emerged victorious. Congratulations must go to Mr. Xu and Ms. Chen’s year 5 KET class for their diligence and their hard work in learning over 90 words prior to the competition. Many thanks also to their English teacher – Ms. Sanchez who supported and assisted both classes in this event.
On the 22nd of November, students celebrated Thanksgiving with the help of older students from the GaoKao and middle school who hosted the event. Thanksgiving occurs on the fourth Thursday of every November in the United States and it is a time when people reflect and give thanks to others. Many historians believe that the event originated from a Christian festival when English pilgrims gave thanks to God for their deliverance and protection more than 400 years ago. During Thanksgiving, students thanked their parents, teachers, peers, the school and many others for the help they had received. Students wrote Thanksgiving cards in recognition of the help others have given. Traditionally, a turkey is eaten at dinner during Thanksgiving however this was substituted with a large cake which was likewise enjoyed by our students. This was our second Thanksgiving celebration at our primary school and it is safe to say that it was a great success as many students were filled with gratitude and glee. We often take for granted the many things we have been given so Thanksgiving is a great time to reflect and thank others for what they have done for us.
On the evening of the 26th of November, the Chinese department held a Chinese poem recitation and reading show. The occasion demonstrated the excellent reading and recitation skills of our primary aged students as well as their extensive understanding of Chinese culture and history. This year, Mr. Williamson – our lower primary English coordinator also read an English poem called ‘The Man from Snowy River’ by Banjo Paterson which was enjoyed by all. He was then followed by readings from Chinese faculty staff members - Rosie Jiang, Eric Xu, Yoyo Gao, Tina Tian, Melissa Xu and Ms. Li. Many Chinese poems from different eras were read. Moreover, these were read with clarity, precision and flair. Congratulations to all students who participated in this special event and many thanks to the Chinese department for hosting such a rich and meaningful event. In the 21st century, Chinese is becoming more and more important as it is superseding English in many areas of life. Students who are proficient in Chinese will have a strong advantage as they compete against others in the global village for employment and opportunities.
The Man from Snowy River,得到了师生的一致好评。

He has worked for English First in Beijing where he was an assistant director of studies (DOS) and where he underwent his Trinity College testing. Mr. Williamson likes to be very animated in his classroom as he believes that students learn by seeing and doing. Mr. Williamson likes to mix Total Physical Response (TPR) with theory learning to develop a learning environment that helps his students use all their abilities. Mr. Williamson runs the reading buddy program with the middle school coordinator on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursday each week as well as he has two lunchtime classes to help students with their English learning. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Williamson back to the international primary team for another year and we trust he will have another wonderful year of teaching at Haileybury.
China has now become the new frontier of the global education market and it currently leads the world in the number university graduates. Some sources also say that there are currently more students studying English in China than there are in America. It is because of these and other reasons that influenced 5 Monash university students to decide to complete their teaching placements at our primary school in Tianjin. Four of the students were allocated to the English department in the primary school while one of the students did her teaching practicum in the primary school’s English bilingual program. By choosing to have their placement at Haileybury, they were able to further develop their teaching skills and apply the latest education theories and concepts learnt at university in an international setting. They were also accompanied, guided and nurtured by experienced and seasoned practitioners in the primary school along the whole process. For many of the student teachers, teaching at Haileybury Tianjin was a real eye-opening experience as some had never taught outside of Australia. They experienced, first-hand, the challenges as well the rewards of teaching English as a second language to non-native English speakers. Many of the student teachers have already decided that international education is the next step in their career. We wish them every success as they finish their studies and embark on a new chapter of their lives either in Australia or abroad.
Lift up your hearts and follow your teacher around the classroom at Haileybury!
