Dear primary school parents and families.
It has been another fruitful and exhilarating fewweeks at the primary school in Tianjin. Academic rigor and student achievement have always been priorities at Haileybury. Consequently, the school has established systems and procedures for ensuring academic success. As an international school, one of the ways this is done is through regular classroom observations. Every week, international teachers and their classes are observed by management to ensure that high standards of teaching and learning are maintained and the Haileybury model of teaching and learning is being followed. Everything from the reduction of teacher talk time, the writing of the lesson’s objectives on the whiteboard, neat student handwriting, student engagement, classroom management, the warm up, student comprehension and focus is monitored and assessedin these observations. International teachers also observe each other so that good teaching practice can be spread across the whole department. On Wednesday the 10thof October, our deputy director of teaching and research – Rosie Jiang, also inspected the lesson plans of teachers and the exercise books of our students. The department found many exemplar pieces of work however we will also continue to formulate ways to improve our student outcomes. The department also held a meeting on Friday the 12thof October which evaluated the demonstration lessons of our senior teachers. The Haileybury ‘I do, we do and you do’ model of teaching was reemphasised and effective classroom teaching practice was discussed.

Haileybury has long had a policy of cooperating and collaborating with the parent community of our school. Feedback from our parents is continuously gathered through our weekly academic report system and these comments are collated and examined. Adjustments and improvements to teaching and learning are constantly made through this system. Parents, however, bring to the school more than just their comments and observations - they also bring their skills, talents and networks. On Friday the 12thof October, three year 6 parents presented three lessons to our year six students. Penelope Weng’s grandmother spoke to the year 6 yellow class on ‘How to take better care of yourself and about etiquette and culture’. Tony Chai’s mother spoke to the year 6 blue class on‘Using maths games to improve maths thinking’ and Louis Zhao’s mother brought Rudra who is her yoga instructor to the year 6 green class. Rudra gave a captivating yoga lesson which the students thoroughly enjoyed. We trust that the mutual collaboration between the school and its parents community will continue into the future and that we will also continue to learn and grow from each other.

Soccer is an activity which is offered as part of our club program in the afternoons. On Saturday the 13thof October, 13 year four and five students travelled to Daystar Academy in Beijing for a soccer tournament against 7 other international schools. They were accompanied by international principal Mr. Robert Erwin, Primary school welfare director Eric Xu and their soccer coach Mr. Joshua Webb. For many of our students, this was the first time they had played and represented the school in an interschool sports activity. Our students played four games against Keystone A and B, Daystar Academy and Hope International. The games consisted of two 10-minute halves with a small break in between. Many of our students such as Hulk Zhang, Bobby Li and Prince Fu played valiantly and showed outstanding skill and technique well beyond their years. Although we did not manage to win any of our matches, the tournament was a steep learning curve for our players regarding soccer skill, teamwork, sportsmanship and physical endurance. It was encouraging to see so many of our parents come and cheer our players on during the tournament and I am sure many of our players made our parents proud. Haileybury will continue to participate in interschool sporting competitions in the future and I trust we will continue to improve.

Our boys gave it their all!
At Haileybury, we are always looking at ways to improve the English teaching and learning of our staff and students. Last year, the English buddy reading program was established and it continues to be a success as it has provided intensive language support to our students.Like last year, we are lucky to have the support of middle school students (around 50) who are listening and reading to 100 primary school students from years one, two and three. They are reading from the popular Oxford Reading Tree, I can read and the Step into Reading series. Teachers and students have commented on how smoothly these sessions have been. They have also noted the many smiles that have radiated from the faces of our children when students accomplish the honourable feat of reading a book in their second language. The school will continue to support this important program because reading is an important aspect of language acquisition. In addition to the Middle and Primary school joint English buddy reading initiative, primary school students have also been borrowing take-home readers since the first week of school. We now have over 1200 graded readers. This year we added American National Geographic graded readers into our collection. We also have childhood favourites which include The Oxford Reading Tree series (levels 1-9), Step into Reading (levels 1-3), the I can read series (Adventures of Biscuit, Berenstain bears, Splat cat, Marley the Dog, Little Critters, Flat Stanley) and the Usborne First Library. Students may now borrow one book at a time from their English teachers who will manage the borrowing and returning of these books. If a student would like to borrow a specific book or more than one book at a time, special permission may be granted, however, please note that if a student loses a book, the guardian of the student will be required to pay the cost of replacement before the student will be allowed to borrow again. Please look at the table below to see which international English teacher is managing the graded reading of your child.

This year we have three new international teachers who have joined our primary school English teaching team. Ms Sanchez is one of our new English teachers at Haileybury. She teaches English to Years 5 and 6 and works with students in Years 2 and 3 in the weekly reading classes. Ms Sanchez also teaches Spanish. Ms Sanchez is originally from Madrid, Spain, but has lived abroad since she was three years old. She takes pride in her international upbringing in Spain, the United States, France, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom. Her professional experiences in international schools in Germany and Spain make her an outstanding addition to the ESL team at Haileybury. Upon completing her BA in Fine Arts and traveling to Central America to volunteer as an English teacher in underserved neighbourhoods of San José, Costa Rica, Ms Sanchez completed a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics for English Language Teaching and another one in Secondary Education. She has also obtained her Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). Her philosophical disposition towards the student-centred and inquiry-led approach of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is reflected in the underlying purpose that guides her teaching practice at Haileybury, which is to cultivate and encourage critical thinking by understanding linguistic concepts in the context of themes that are of personal, local or global significance (science, nature, environmental studies, etc.). In Ms Sanchez’s English class, students are encouraged to be more than passive recipients of knowledge. They are expected to participate actively in the analysis of language and in the negotiation of meaning. She accomplishes this by making her students find reasons for grammatical rules and by asking them to work collaboratively with each other. This way, student understanding is grounded deeply, and concepts can be retained for a longer period of time. Ms Sanchez derives huge professional and personal satisfaction from contributing to the growth of young learners. We are pleased to have her in the primary international team this year and we trust she will have a successful year.

On Thursday the 18thof October, over 200 primary school staff and students set out from our school campus early in the morning for their Autumn excursion to Happy City in Tianjin. After the students were briefed concerning safety and the day’s activities early in the morning, our students collected their lunch packs which included many delicious and healthy items such as a chicken burger, yoghurt, fruit, water and cake. We arrived at Happy City at around 10 o’clock and the children spent the next five hours learning about different occupations as well as having fun at the same time. For example, they dressed up in police uniform and shot plastic water bullets at a target from a gun. They attacked each other with balls as soldiers and became STEM experts when they used Lego to create their own interesting objects. They delivered parcels to different houses and offices as couriers and made delicious cakes and hamburgers as chefs. They experienced an earthquake in a natural disaster institute and became artists when they drew their own artworks. In addition, they also used an old-fashioned printing press to print paper and they checked for dangerous goods as baggage handlers and served as airline flight attendants. Our students behaved well and were eager to learn more about all the different occupations available. It was an exciting and memorable experience for our students and they thoroughly enjoyed participating in the many exhibits on offer. We can’t wait for the next primary school excursion in Spring!
