31/08/2018
Dear primary school parents and families,
Welcome to the primary school bulletin of Tianjin Haileybury International School. Each fortnight, a bulletin will be written which will report on the news and events within the primary school. There will also be a special focus on the English program in the bulletin as well. We have also welcomed many new Chinese and foreign teachers into the teaching team and they have already been warmly received by staff and students. This week we will report on some of the new international teachers who have just joined us. Firstly, Mr. Jason Swerdfeger joins us this year from Ottawa, Canada. He has been in China since 2002 and has stayed predominantly in north eastern China. His hobbies include cooking, traveling, judo and drinking tea. He has taught himself Chinese and is able to speak about 7 languages. Secondly, Ms. Paula Teran is a highly qualified professional teacher and joins us this year. She holds a Master’s in Applied Linguistics and a Master’s in Education (Secondary) from foreign universities. She has lived in America, France, Spain, the U.K and Germany. Her hobbies include fitness, dancing and badminton. This is her first time in China and she is excited to be here. We warmly welcome Jason and Paula this year and we trust that they will both have a productive and successful year here at Haileybury.

At Haileybury, every child matters, every day. This means that we seek to cater to and respect the individual needs of every student at our school. In order to make this motto a reality, we have implemented policies and procedures across all subjects which are aimed at improving the educational outcomes of all of our students. These outcomes are holistic in nature as they focus not only on the test scores of individuals but also on the educational process in the classroom. The implementation of policies and procedures for the purpose of maintaining teaching and learning quality is seen in the Primary School English program. These policies and procedures can be broadly divided into Formative and Summative performance indicators. Formative performance indicators are process indicators such as student handwriting neatness, the utilisation of the Haileybury Teaching Model (I do, We do, You do), the giving of homework, student organisation and teaching formalities. Summative performance indicators show how successful a staff or student has been. Such indicators include student weekly test scores, the quality of homework submission, student behaviour in the classroom and parental feedback. This year we have also incorporated a new Cambridge textbook – Superminds which will used in upper primary. Superminds is a great textbook which has been specifically written to cater to primary school students who are learning English as their second language. We trust students will enjoy it and learn more English through this new textbook. We will also continue with the internationally recognised Cambridge exams this year which will be expanded to not only include the KET but also the PET exam in upper primary. At Haileybury, high standards have been set for the purpose of maintaining the quality of teaching and learning every day in the primary school.
在小学部的低年级,我们将继续使用国际认可的剑桥英语考试,今年不仅只有KET(剑桥英语入门考试)还增加了PET(剑桥英语初级考试)。

At Haileybury, we seek to provide our students with world-class opportunities which are not provided in other schools. Students can select programs such as golf, tennis, oil painting, violin, piano, guitar, performing arts, dance class, robotics, and Cambridge English classes. It is important to develop students who are able to excel in fields outside of the core subjects of English, maths and Chinese so that they can become well rounded individuals. For example, it is believed that learning piano or a musical instrument will help to speed up a child’s cognitive development. As, it is impossible to provide every single extra-curricular class, actual classes offered will depend on student demand in each category so if you want your child to participate in a particular extra-curricular activity, please enrol your child as soon as possible.
