Building a Schoolhouse for Children in Cambodia: The Story of My 1st Time as a Construction Worker
As a school that advocates international comprehensive talents development, Beijing Royal School sets up various programs. As students, we can choose among the programs which we are most interested in and believe to have real value. I joined in a community assistance program for a rural primary school in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
At the end of 2016, under the guidance of our teacher, I went, along with some of my classmates, to the primary school of Sloan Village. There were 300 school-aged pupils who were in urgent need of schoolhouses and teaching facilities, so that they could acquire proper education in a good environment.
At that time, Sloan primary school had one schoolhouse and two classrooms. These two classrooms consisted of a nursery classroom and a normal classroom that could accommodate 35 students respectively. The teaching pattern of the school was that differentgrades had their classes in the morning or in the afternoon separately in a shared classroom. That means every student could only spend one halfday in the classroom. This shortage of classrooms was not the only reason that had led to a school attendance problem for the local kids. Other reasons, such as lack of teachers and the labor demand of local families, might also attribute to the problem.
In January, the group of WOW had constructed a dining hall with a storage room, a lavatory, a well and a two-hundred-meter long school fence. The WOW group cooperated with the FAO, and the WFP donated rice and canned tuna to the local primary school. We built kitchens, storage rooms and dining halls for the local primary school, as well as appointed a cook to offer the students a standard breakfast. With these special services available, more families might send their kids to school. The lavatory was gender-separated in the hope of establishing proper gender-awareness and self-protective awareness for the local children. Fences could prevent the school from outside disturbance and, thus, help to provide a better and safer environment for learning.
Building a foundation for the students was really exhausting and sometimes painful to our bodies. Nonetheless, we were cheered by the smile on every kids' face.
Of course, we were only contributing modest strengths compared to the significant contribution which Beijing Royal School has made. Be that as it may, I did my best to help the kids who are suffering in poverty.
